It shouldn't be a surprise that I'm supporting Barack Obama for president.

For those are shocked, let me ramble on for a bit about why I'm excited about this election. )

But I'm also a poor college student, and while I'd love to be able to raise five billion dollars, that just isn't happening.

So I thought to myself, "What can I do that might encourage other folks to give a few bucks?" And the only thing I came up with, the only real "skill" I've got, is the ability to write decent fanfic. We are what we are. :)

So! For everyone who donates $5 (or more) to the Obama camp, I will write a fic. Simply donate, let me know what fandom/pairing/situation you'd like, and I'll get it back to you. Slash, het, and gen are all fine.

Terms and Conditions: )

Fandoms I can write for: )

ETA: I understand everyone is eager to have their fic, and I really, really appreciate everyone who donated and contributed to this historic and FUCKING AWESOME win! I had hoped to have the fics finished by election day but...that didn't happen. I could go in to why, but suffice it say, my life took the detour through Crazytown, and I havn't had the chance to give the fics the time and effort they deserve.

So. Here is my promise: I will have the fics finished by inauguration day. In fact, I'm heavily leaning towards posting them all on inauguration day. We'll see...I might just get over-eager and post as I finish.

I just wanted to let everyone know that no, I haven't forgotten you.

Thanks again, everyone!

Comfort Fic

I have a fic sitting on my computer, almost 90 pages now, that is quite possibly the stupidest thing ever written. It's a South Park/Harry Potter crossover that I've been working on for over two years, now. It came out of a "what house would the South Park kids get sorted into" discussion, and has now evolved into a really long, actually plotty, mostly gen fic where Cartman gets sorted into Sytherin (of course), supports Voldemort (also of course), and Stan and Kyle have to try and stop him and convince the wizarding world that he's a threat, because if anyone could help Voldemort take over the world, it'd be Cartman.

This fic is my comfort fic. It will never, ever see the light of day, because it is three kinds of dreadful, and no one will like it but me. But when I'm depressed, or bored, or suffering writer's block, I come back to the story. It makes me happy.

Um, file this under pointless entries, I guess.

This is probably the most narcissistic meme ever, but what the hell, everyone else is doing it. Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] mizzmarvel, but I've seen it everywhere.

If you would like, please quote a bit of my writing at me. Find that one story of mine that you really like, and find a sentence or a paragraph that presses your prose-buttons in the right way, and comment here with it. I don't care how long or short the excerpt is.

All my stuff is here.

I wrote a SGA fic this week. Not to brag, but the beginning is great, and the end is solid, and I even managed to write decently hot sex, for once. So I was feeling pretty good, until I read the whole thing over again, and realized that without even trying, I can pick out like 10 plot holes. Sigh.

Yeah, I could gut the thing and rework it, but...I'm incredibly lazy. And I just plain don't care that much. I think I'll keep it, though, and cannibalize it later. (I've got a whole folder called "The Chop Shop" where I keep fics that suck ass but have some redeeming qualities, and borrow when I need spare parts for other fics.)

I'm having a hard time with a Drake and Josh fic I'm writing (DON'T JUDGE ME), simply because it's by necessity from Drake's POV, and Drake is...well, he's a canon idiot. And so I'm constantly having to go, "Oh, can't use that word, Drake wouldn't know what that means." Also, Drake can't note that Josh says something sincerely, because a) that's probably not a word Drake would ever use, and b) he's just not that insightful. It's like writing in a straightjacket.

WHINE WHINE WHINE.

Weirdness

I think it's so funny that the fic of mine, to date, that has garnered the most positive reviews and has been rec'ed the most (going from del.icio.us links) is a fic I don't particularly like (A Little While). It's fine, I guess, a serviceable response to a request, but I've re-read it couple times, now, and it's almost embarrassing. I just don't think it's very well written, at all. Weird-o.

Of course, every once in a while I'll still get feedback on a couple of the old Byron/Jeff fics I wrote, and I just want to cringe because they're so bad. Or, even scarier, when people review the shit I posted ten years ago on ff.net. Blech!

This is not to say that I don't appreciate feedback, or that I don't love that people enjoy my fic, it's just...strange.

So for my last post of 2007, I decided to be kind of pretentious and do a 2007 wrap up. Warning: the following post is long, self-involved, and will probably not be very interesting to anyone but me.

Top 5 things I enjoyed in 2007 )

Top 5 things I'm going to (try to) do differently in 2008 )

Top 5 fanfics I read during 2007 )

[livejournal.com profile] mizzmarvel is having a Give Neville Blow Jobs meme (much like the First Kiss memes, but cooler).

Warning: Spoilers for book 7!

(Also, because I am a big whore, here is my Neville/Luna contribution.)

Yeah, so my LJ is going to be fairly Potter-centric for the next couple days.

Bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch. Also, spoilers. )

Yay!

Some of you know that I participated in [livejournal.com profile] fic_on_demand's annual June Fic A Day challenge. I managed to write a fic every day...30 fics in 15 fandoms. Half of them are absolutely awful, the rest are O.K., and there are a couple that I actually like, but it was a lot of fun and I wrote a bunch of stuff that was outside my comfort zone.

If you're interested, here is the complete list of what I wrote, with ratings and summary. Fandoms include Supernatural, Angels in America, Baby-Sitters Club, Everworld, Star Trek: New Frontier, Psych, Star Trek: Voyager, Animorphs, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Boy Meets World, FAKE, Weiss Kreuz, Angel, The Dark is Rising, and Drake and Josh. )

I spent most of my fourth of July in bed reading fanfic. Yay? And after approx. 9,000 Numb3rs fic--don't look at me like that! I didn't ask for another fandom, it was thrust upon me--I have just one little complaint. ::cough:: Dear Numb3rs eppescest writers: "Buddy" is not a pet name. And Supernatural wincest writers? "Sammy" isn't a pet name, either. ::eyeroll::

Actually, today I read several Supernatural fics contained my absolute biggest pet peeve. I cannot stand it when Dean points a gun at Sam as a joke or an empty threat. Just, no. They were raised around weapons, they were taught how to use them at a young age by an expert, and lesson number one, drilled into you constantly, is: never point a gun at someone unless you intend to shoot them. John Winchster would have beat his boys black and blue if they ever pointed their guns at each other in play, and I can't see Dean throwing off all that early training and holding a gun to Sam's chest to get him to take a shower or whatever.

Ah, well, I'm drugged to the gills and bitchy, and I should probably be asleep.

(PS: Teen boys are so moody! Everyone talks about teen girls, but my two brothers--12 and 17--are so sullen and touchy! I can't really compare, not having a little sister in the house all the time, but I'm going out of mind. Sometimes they're fine, and other times the littlest thing sets them off. I kind of want to hit them both.)

So...

I'm kind of really into Mac/PC fanfic write now. ::blush:: But if anyone else shares my sickness, have some Mac/PC fanfic recs. At least they aren't brothers?

Started the second summer session today (finished the first up last Thursday). My teachers seem like they'll be fine (though my history prof speaks SO SOFTLY. I was in the first row and I could barely hear him) and I'm really not looking to 6 weeks of near-constant school, but I need these classes, so I'll deal. :)

Am trying to decide between taking a history class, an English class, and a sewing class. I kinda need the English class, the history class would be useful, and there's no reason to take the sewing class except I want to sew my own clothes. If I was a good girl, I'd take the English class, but...I'm not always a good girl. I have a week to decide, though.

Wah, my mom's was gone for three days last week, will be gone for three days this week, and will be gone all next week. I MISS HER.

So it seems like things have calmed down. I've unlocked all my fanfic, and moved what was over at [livejournal.com profile] bscslashfic (which is now flocked) over here. All my fanfic can be found in my memories, or by tags.

Also, I now have a del.icio.us rec page, found here. I love that place! It makes rec'ing so much easier! :) 114 recs in 19 fandoms, so far, and I'm adding to it all the time.

My little brother came up to me earlier and handed me a story he'd started to write. I kind of want to cry. Not only is it Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfiction, my little brother wrote something. On his own.

See, he has learning disabilities. He didn't know how to read a couple years ago. But we changed school districts, found excellent teachers and tutors, and now he can read and write! It used to take him hours, no exaggeration, to write one paragraph, and he hated it. Almost every writing assignment involved tears and temper tantrums. It's been getting better, but he still has a very difficult time writing.

But he wrote something, without us sitting with him and holding his hand, without being forced. I am so proud of him!!

(Thought I'd share what he'd written so far. All spelling and grammar errors are left...when he's finished, we're going to go through the story together and correct it.)

I think I should stop listening to my Josh Groban CD when I write fanfic. Because it all ends up really shmoopy, and I have to delete, like, half of what I write when I turn off the CD and realize what I've done. I started to think seriously about a songfic to February Song, for fuck's sake.

Seriously, I think Awake is cursed. I didn't care one way or another about Josh Groban before I picked up that CD, and now I'm a half-step and a jump away from being a raving Grobanite.

PS: Do you pronounce "our" like "are", "hour", or neither?

I've been working on a Psych fanfic for a while, and it's driving me nuts. I know how it's going to end, I've written most of the major scenes, but it's just not...right. I had an idea of who the characters were and where they were going to go, but then they had sex, and now it's all wrong.

The sex scene is kinda hot (if I do say so myself) and perfectly in character, but it just doesn't mesh with the rest of the fic at all. And normally I'd be fine with just taking it out (sex scenes are embarrassing) but then the fic just looks empty, and besides, it's good, it just doesn't work with the rest of the fic. And it feels wrong to twist the rest of the fic around the sex scene, but the rest of the fic doesn't work without the sex scene and GAH. Just need to put it aside and move on...I'll get back to it in a couple weeks and hopefully have enough perspective to figure out what to do.

Okay, I have a question for the fanfiction writers out there:

Of the fanfics you've posted online, what fic of yours are you most proud of, and what fic makes you cringe? Why?

If you want to play along, post the question, along with your answers and links to the fics, on your LJ.

My answers. )

I can't wait to read everyone's responses! :)

I had the chance to read through the Harry Potter books when I with Grandma at the hospital. I thought the reason I liked books 1-3 best was because I read them as a child/young teen. Turns out that no, books 1-3 are (IMHO) far better than books 4-6, even reading them as an adult. And book six still sucks. (Although book 5 is still my least favorite. I couldn't even get through it...I kept skimming it.)

I've been reading a lot of HP fanfic, some old Snape/Harry, a little Snape/Lupin. There is a Snape/Draco story I read years ago and can't find....it's quite long, and follows their relationship from before Draco was born. IIRC, Draco was physically weak, a lot of allergies and asthma, and maybe he was part Veela? (Although I could be mixing two fic, there.) Anyway, I want to find it, and I can't. It probably isn't as good as I remembered, though.

I wrote a really long, really bad Harry/Draco fic six years ago. A friend of mine had a copy and loved it, and out of the blue, asked if I was going to finish it. Now I stopped liking H/D years ago and it's been sitting abandoned on my harddrive since then. So I opened it up, just to see what I could do with it, and OH MY GOD. It is such a peice of shit. It is a cliched, tear-soaked, sappy mess. The thought of re-writing it to make it presentable makes me a little sick, so it's just going to have to remain unfinished.

You know, I am all about slashing antagonistic characters. I'm all about the Snape/Harry, or Lucius/Harry, or Snape/Black, or even the occasional Harry/Draco. Schuldig/Yohji is my favorite Weiss Kreuz pairing (next to Crawford/Aya). Mulder/Krycek makes me squee like a little fangirl. And Spike/Xander was my intro into slash. So, yeah, I really enjoy relationships between characters who canonically hate each other.

However.

I just do not understand Jackson/Lisa fanfiction for the movie Red Eye. At all. I've even tried to read it. Of all the characters in all of existence that could possibly be romantically or (consensually) sexually involved, Jackson and Lisa make the least sense. Jeez, I could see, I dunno, Aslan/The White Witch before I could see Jackson/Lisa.

But maybe I'm just weird. :)
